Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME) is an orthodontic technique used to widen the upper jaw by applying heavy forces to separate the mid-palatal suture. This procedure is typically performed in children and adolescents, before the sutures fuse, to correct transverse maxillary deficiencies such as crossbites, crowding, or airway problems. Appliances like the Hyrax or Haas expander are commonly used, and they gradually increase the width of the maxilla by turning a screw mechanism. The expansion not only improves dental alignment but also has skeletal effects, such as enlarging the nasal cavity and enhancing airway function. Patients may experience temporary discomfort and a gap between the front teeth during treatment, but retention is essential to stabilize the results and prevent relapse. In adults, where sutures are more ossified, surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) may be required to achieve similar outcomes. Overall, RME is a powerful method to create space, correct occlusion, and improve facial balance when carefully selected and managed.
