Most students who earn a 3 or a 4 on the AP® European History Exam already know enough history to score higher. What costs them points on the free-response section is not missing knowledge. It is the gap between what they write and what readers actually reward: a description where the question asked for a purpose, evidence from outside the time window, a document summarized instead of sourced, a thesis with no line of reasoning. This book closes that gap.
Practice to Mastery: Decoding AP® European History Free Response Questions is written for the course and exam description that takes effect in fall 2026, with the first exam in May 2027. Every free-response question on that exam is required: three short-answer questions (a secondary source, a primary text, and a non-text source such as a painting, cartoon, poster, map, or chart), one document-based question, and one broad long essay question covering about half of the course's chronology. The book explains each rubric line in plain language and then trains each one until earning it becomes a habit.
Every question chapter follows the same three steps. Learn: fully decoded examples, each with three original student responses at different score levels and a point-by-point decode showing which sentence earns which point and why other sentences fall short. Practice: timed questions you answer yourself before looking at anything else. Check: a rubric, several acceptable answers, the most common ways students lose each point, and a Score Yourself checklist; every full DBQ and LEQ check adds a model full-credit essay and a decoded mid-range essay.
Inside you will find:
45 short-answer questions, including a full chapter on reading works of art, cartoons, posters, maps, and charts, the newest and lowest-scoring question type
7 full document-based questions and 9 full long essay questions in the new single-prompt format, plus a DBQ workshop that trains each of the seven points one at a time
3 complete free-response sections for timed practice, with score sheets on the 22-point raw scale
Twelve error codes that label every lost point, with an error tally at the end of each chapter
A toolkit of look-alike pairs, unit-by-unit periodization guardrails, a sentence ladder for turning name-drops into explanations, and connection maps for the complexity point
Coverage of all nine units from 1450 to 2001, with extra attention to art and culture, primary sources, and postwar Europe
Every question, historian passage, sample response, chart, map, and explanation is original. Primary sources are verified public-domain documents, cited with author, title, date, and translation, or clearly labeled original period-style documents; works of art are described in words and cited. No College Board exam questions, documents, scoring guidelines, or student responses are reproduced.
