This book is not for perfect parents.
It is for real parents.
For those who doubt.
For those who make mistakes.
For those who get tired.
For those who love deeply... even when they do not always know how to do it better.
If this book accomplishes anything, it will not be to give you all the answers, but to help you ask better questions. And above all, to help you see your child in a different way: not only as someone who must learn how to behave, but as someone who is learning how to become.
Parenting is not about raising perfect children.
It is about accompanying a human being on the journey of becoming themselves.
Parenting, understood in its deepest dimension, goes far beyond the transmission of rules, habits, or practical knowledge. Above all, it is a complex process of personal development, in which the child becomes a person through relationships, language, and culture.
From this perspective, this book belongs to a tradition of thought that recognizes childhood not merely as a developmental stage, but as a structuring period in which the fundamental coordinates of psychic life are formed.
In this sense, the present work directly engages with the ideas introduced by Sigmund Freud, who positioned the Oedipus Complex as an organizing matrix of subjectivity, insofar as it articulates the dimensions of desire, law, and prohibition.
It has been widely recognized that children do not develop in an emotional vacuum, but within relationships shaped by tensions, ambivalence, and conflicts that should not be viewed as anomalies, but rather as necessary conditions for psychic structuring.
The Oedipal experience introduces the individual into a logic in which desire encounters its limits, making possible entry into the symbolic order and, consequently, into social life.
Building upon and reformulating these ideas, Jacques Lacan deepened the symbolic dimension of this process, emphasizing the importance of the paternal function as a structuring operator that enables the child to move beyond the dual mother-child relationship.
Far from being reduced to the empirical figure of the father, this function refers to the introduction of a law that organizes desire, establishing the possibility of difference, lack, and mediation.
This framework is particularly relevant in the contemporary context, characterized by significant transformations in family structures, forms of authority, and the sociocultural conditions of parenting.
The decline of traditional references, along with the emergence of new forms of family bonds, raises fundamental questions about how the structuring functions that allow children to orient themselves in both their inner and outer worlds are transmitted today.
Within this context, the book you hold in your hands offers a valuable bridge between theory and practice.
It does not merely present concepts-it translates them into concrete everyday situations, offering a clinical perspective on phenomena such as tantrums, jealousy, difficulty tolerating frustration, and challenges surrounding boundaries.
This book offers a different response.
You will not find rigid recipes or perfect formulas.
You will find something far more valuable: a way to deeply understand your child.
Based on more than 27 years of working with children, families, and parenting processes, this practical guide offers tools to help you better understand your child:
• Why your child feels what they feel
• What lies behind their tantrums, jealousy, or fears
• How to support their emotional development
• How to set boundaries while preserving a healthy bond
