At the age of 6, Phill found himself repeating the words of the pastor at Vacation Bible School. Unsure of what he had just did, he was quickly ushered into the waters of baptism. Still uncertain of the significance of the Gospel, Atonement, and the work of Christ on the Cross-all beliefs he purportedly professed-Phill began to ask questions about these teachings as he grew into a teenager. He held to the assurance of "once saved, always saved," as he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the struggles of life. Though professing Christ, the life he lived reflected a man who denied Christ's authority over his life.

In Practical Atheist, Phill uses his life experience and the path that he took to examine the dangers of easy-believism in the Church and the importance of having a solid grasp on the implications of one's theology.
