Pixie Frogs Care

Pixie frogs, scientifically known as Pyxicephalus adspersus, are large amphibians native to southern Africa. They are primarily found in countries such as Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. In the wild, Pixie frogs inhabit savannas, grasslands, and semi-arid regions, often preferring areas with loose, sandy soil that allows them to burrow and avoid extreme temperatures. They are terrestrial and spend much of their time on the ground rather than in trees or water, although they do require access to shallow water sources for hydration and breeding.
These frogs are well-adapted to seasonal climates. During dry periods, they enter a state of estivation, burrowing underground to conserve moisture and energy. This behavior highlights their resilience and ability to survive harsh conditions, which is important for captive care, as keepers must simulate periods of rest and proper humidity levels. Their natural diet consists mainly of insects, small mammals, and other invertebrates, reflecting their carnivorous feeding habits. Captive diets should mimic this variety to ensure optimal health.
