Val is the kind of girl people notice immediately, even when she wishes they wouldn't. Living in the suburbs outside Chicago, she moves through school with a mix of charisma, sharp humor, and restless energy that draws attention she does not know how to control or escape. To others, she seems confident and unpredictable. To herself, she feels constantly misunderstood.

At home, her life is shaped by a loving but complicated family where success, structure, and expectations come naturally to others but feel just out of reach for her. Her older brother thrives academically with the support of systems she struggles to use, while Val fights through distractions, emotional overwhelm, and an unspoken sense that her mind works differently than everyone else's.

As school pressure builds and social rumors distort who she is, Val begins to withdraw, insisting she is fine while quietly falling behind. A growing tension between who she is and who she is expected to be pushes her toward a difficult realization, that her struggles may not be about effort or attitude, but something deeper she has never been given words for.

Outsider is a coming of age story about identity, neurodivergence, and the pressure to appear "normal" in a world that rarely explains what that means. It follows one girl's journey from resistance to understanding, as she learns that she is not broken, just different, and that learning how her mind works may be the first step toward finally feeling at home in it.
