Evie has spent thirteen months as Keeper of a sub-level archive beneath Southwark Street - cataloguing confessions, managing temperatures, maintaining the delicate equilibrium of a collection that holds what guilt leaves behind. She is good at the work. Precise. Methodical. She does not flinch from difficult materials.

She has also, without knowing it, been creating events rather than recording them.

As the Archive grows unstable - shelves shifting, documents overwriting themselves, temperature logs revising their own history - Evie begins to understand the true nature of her function. Every confession she has read has not merely been received. It has been completed. Crystallised into fixed moral reality by the quality of her attention. And some of those confessions described events that had not yet happened.

Meanwhile, forensic psychologist Nadia Chen has spent nine months tracking eighteen patients carrying guilt that doesn't belong to them - foreign moral weight with no psychological origin she can identify. One of them has died. The source, she now understands, is not psychological. Not sociological. It is ontological. And it is on Southwark Street.
