Expect nothing. Fear nothing. Be free.
But can a man truly be free when his family depends on him, society judges him by his poverty, and the world increasingly measures human worth by wealth, power and technology?
Meet Mr Malung N. The N stands for Nothing.
Born into a poor family in Syad Lyngdoh, a village in Meghalaya, Northeast India, Malung lives with his wife, Merina, and their daughter, Iamon, in Shillong. He owns little, earns barely enough and possesses an inconvenient habit of questioning everything.
He reads Dostoevsky while worrying about the price of rice. He admires the courage of Prometheus but sometimes struggles to pay his electricity bill. He condemns corruption, questions religious hypocrisy, challenges political authority and refuses to believe that a successful life must be measured by possessions.
Yet there is one question he cannot easily answer: What good is a man's philosophy if the people he loves must pay the price for it?
Spanning fifty years, from 2026 to 2076, N for Nothing follows Malung through a changing India and an increasingly uncertain world.
Artificial intelligence transforms employment and education. Governments promise progress. Technology begins making decisions once entrusted to human beings. Wealth accumulates, old inequalities survive, and society discovers new ways to make ordinary people feel unnecessary.
Through poverty, marriage, fatherhood, public struggles, personal failures, friendship, grief and old age, Malung confronts questions that refuse to disappear:
Can you remain honest in a society that rewards compromise?
Is freedom possible without money?
What happens to human dignity when machines become more capable than their creators?
Can a country call itself progressive when ordinary people still struggle for justice?
Is a life spent pursuing success necessarily a life well lived?
And if death eventually takes everything, what makes living worthwhile?
Rooted in the hills of Meghalaya and informed by Russian literature, Indian philosophical thought and Greek mythology, N for Nothing is an original philosophical novel about a man who refuses to surrender his curiosity, even when life repeatedly exposes the contradictions in his beliefs.
Malung is neither a saint nor a hero. He is stubborn, occasionally foolish, frequently mistaken and capable of extraordinary tenderness. His wife challenges his principles. His daughter questions his wisdom. The passing years force him to reconsider what he once believed with absolute certainty.
His greatest struggle is learning that freedom cannot excuse him from responsibility.
N for Nothing is a novel for readers who have questioned the meaning of success, felt trapped by society's expectations, worried about humanity's technological future, or wondered whether they are truly living or simply surviving.
In a world obsessed with becoming somebody, Malung N spends his life asking a different question:
What if the courage to be nobody is the beginning of freedom?
