From the traffic lights of Sandton, where Tawanda sells bananas to drivers who judge him before they know him, to the crowded rooms of Alexandra, the spaza yards, taxi ranks, police queues, university corridors and nights of xenophobic fear, this novel tells the story of what happens after the migrant crosses the border.

This is not a simple story of arrival. It is a story of survival after arrival.

Tawanda discovers that Johannesburg is both cruel and generous. It humiliates him, but it also teaches him. It wounds him, but it also gives him community. Among vendors, workers, migrants and struggling South Africans, he finds what he calls the Republic of Foreigners: a world of bruised fruit, shared meals, borrowed airtime, warnings about police, laughter after bad news and people who are poor but refuse to disappear.

Yet belonging is never simple.

Tawanda remains emotionally tied to Tariro, the woman he left behind in Zimbabwe, whose love is stretched across distance, silence, remittances and postponed promises. At the same time, he is drawn into the world of Nomsa, a South African woman who understands poverty, danger and the borders that exist even inside one's own country. Through Nomsa, South Africa becomes more than a place of rejection. It becomes complicated. It becomes human. It becomes another kind of home.

As xenophobic violence rises and the chant "Abahambe" - "They must go" moves through the streets, Tawanda is forced to confront the deepest questions of migrant life:

Where does a person belong when home has failed him and exile refuses him?
