Was ist heute noch typisch niederdeutsch auf der Ebene der Syntax? Der Zusammenfall von Dativ und Akkusativ gilt als ein (morphologisches) Kennzeichen, und er hat theoretische Konsequenzen für die Syntax. Nach einer grundlegenden morphologischen Bestandsaufnahme werden diese Konsequenzen untersucht, indem einerseits spontane Gespräche analysiert werden; andererseits werden Sätze von kompetenten Sprechern bewertet. Auf diese Weise ergibt sich ein differenziertes Bild: Es lässt sich mithilfe typologischer und funktionaler Argumente ein ursprüngliches System niederdeutscher Syntax rekonstruieren, das unter dem langanhaltenden Einfluss des Standarddeutschen überformt worden ist. Dabei ergeben sich Konvergenzphänomene zwischen den Kontaktvarietäten und diese wirken in beide Richtungen: Das Standarddeutsche beeinflusst das Niederdeutsche (es entsteht bspw. ein neuer Dativ), das Niederdeutsche hat aber ebenfalls einen subtilen Einfluss auf das nördliche Standarddeutsch.
