A service call is not a race to the failed part. The costliest mistakes in HVAC/R work rarely come from not knowing refrigeration theory. They come from replacing a component the measurements never pointed to, then finding the original complaint still there on the return visit.

Much of the trade is still learned as a list of symptoms and their usual causes, pieced together from textbook chapters, pocket charts, manufacturer bulletins and short exam guides. That works until the equipment does something unusual. Inverter compressors, communicating controls and electronic expansion valves have made guesswork more expensive, and the shift to mildly flammable A2L refrigerants has changed both the readings you expect and the precautions the work demands.

This 25-chapter handbook replaces guesswork with a method. Every topic moves the same way: from what the system is doing, to the physical behavior that explains it, to the measurement that confirms or rules it out. Readings are treated as evidence, and no job is finished until safe, stable operation has been proven. Read it straight through as a complete course, or open it at a single chapter when you need an answer on site.

Inside, you will learn to:

  • Read the refrigeration cycle from field data, using superheat, subcooling and pressure-temperature relationships as state indicators rather than rules of thumb.
  • Separate look-alike faults, such as restriction versus undercharge versus low load, before touching the charge.
  • Test motors, capacitors, contactors, relays, sensors and control boards under operating conditions instead of swapping parts.
  • Install, pressure-test, evacuate and charge with discipline, from nitrogen flow during brazing and micron decay testing to charging by weight, superheat or subcooling.
  • Handle A2L refrigerants safely through recovery, cylinder practice, leak detection, ventilation and storage.
  • Prepare for the federal refrigerant-handling technician certification exam, covering Core, Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal, as a test of understanding rather than memorization.

Key topics: service safety and measurement discipline; refrigerants and lubricants; compressors, condensers, metering devices and piping; electrical fundamentals, controls and inverters; airflow and psychrometrics; residential split and packaged systems, heat pumps, ductless mini-split and variable refrigerant flow systems; walk-ins, reach-ins and ice machines; chillers, cooling towers and hydronic loops; and refrigerant recovery, reclamation and leak management.

Every chapter opens with task-based objectives and closes with practice and field review questions: 1,000 multiple-choice questions in all, each with its answer and explanation. The certification chapters add a 150-question review set, two 75-question mixed practice exams with error-classified rationales, and a combined quick reference. More than 70 figures, a glossary of acronyms and an index complete the book.

Who it is for: HVAC/R service and refrigeration technicians, apprentices and trainees, facility maintenance technicians, and anyone preparing for refrigerant certification who wants to understand the equipment, not just pass the test.

Open the book, take the readings first, and start turning every service call into a diagnosis you can prove.
