There is a widening gap between what traditional education delivers and what society actually needs. Schools and universities demand heavy costs - money, time, personal sacrifice, and public funding - yet they consistently fail to provide two essential categories of skills.

Work skills. The abilities the market truly rewards, enabling people to earn good incomes and build durable careers as employees or entrepreneurs.

Life skills. The tools needed to function in modern society, from avoiding financial traps and destructive habits to maintaining physical and mental health.

The result is a costly mismatch. People struggle financially. Companies leave roles unfilled for months or years. Society absorbs the cost through wasted talent, lower productivity, and unnecessary suffering.

Traditional education suffers from two core problems.

Low quality. Educator incentives are misaligned with student outcomes.
High cost. Learners pay directly with money and indirectly with years of lost income and opportunity.

This book does not argue for reforming the existing system. It proposes a different paradigm - one built on new incentives that allow education to evolve, adapt, and compete.

That paradigm is MentorGuilds.

MentorGuilds are education partnerships where mentors succeed only when their mentees do. They are designed to align incentives around real outcomes, not credentials or prestige.

The core features of MentorGuilds are:

  1. The funding model: MentorGuilds earn income only from their mentees - primarily through a small share of the mentees' future earnings (above an income floor), paid only for a set number hours worked in jobs that largely use the specialized skills the MentorGuilds provided (or, optionally, paid in the form of tuition). There are no debt or interest payments, fees, or penalties; and mentees owe nothing if they earn nothing or change professions. When mentees succeed, the MentorGuilds succeed. When mentees struggle, both share the loss. This shared fate ensures accountability, long-term support for work and life, and a focus on real-world results.
  2. Open Data: Every mentee's contract, and cohort performance results (work hours, income, etc.), is published as open data (example), making MentorGuilds the most transparent institutions in society. This empowers individuals to identify thriving and compatible MentorGuilds; helps governments, companies, and society make smarter financial and policy decisions; exposes abuse of mentees/employees; and rewards MentorGuilds that deliver genuine, measurable value.
  3. Freedom: MentorGuilds can take many forms - not-for-profit or for-profit, local or global, small or large, digital or in-person. They may provide direct training or fund others to do so, focus on niche fields or broader industries, and design flexible or structured programs. Their greatest strength lies in this freedom to quickly adapt to changing industries, economic trends, and to the evolving needs of each mentee over time.

MentorGuilds may pay for tuition, learning materials, external courses, or stipends that allow mentees to focus on training and early career development.

Although MentorGuilds may resemble Income Share Agreements or Income-Contingent Loans at first glance, this book explains why they are fundamentally different - and how the failures and successes of those models shaped key design decisions to avoid repeating past mistakes.

What society needs is not another rigid system, but a flexible and evolving one. A system that values human potential, rewards results, and adapts to change.

MentorGuilds are built for that role. Their mentees are not customers to be misled or products to be processed. They are partners in a shared pursuit of prosperity.
