Memories of a Sculptor's Wife

"Memories of a Sculptor's Wife" is an intimate and evocative memoir by Mary Adams French, providing a rare glimpse into the personal and professional life of her husband, the renowned American sculptor Daniel Chester French. As the partner of the artist responsible for the seated figure of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial and the "Minute Man" in Concord, Mary Adams French offers a unique vantage point on the creative process and the social circles of the American art world during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The narrative weaves through the couple's experiences in New York, Washington D.C., and their idyllic summer estate, Chesterwood, in the Berkshires. French populates her recollections with anecdotes featuring prominent figures of the era, from fellow artists and architects to literary luminaries and political leaders. Her writing captures the spirit of the Gilded Age, detailing the challenges and triumphs of a monumental career while reflecting on the domestic life that supported such artistic heights.

This work serves as both a social history and a personal tribute, preserving the legacy of one of America's greatest sculptors through the eyes of his closest confidante. It is a compelling resource for those interested in the history of American art, the evolution of public monuments, and the rich cultural tapestry of the early twentieth century.
