Jenny Foley - divorced and struggling to make ends meet as a dog walker in the Boston suburb of Windermere - befriends a recently-arrived Scottish au pair, Lindsay Shaw. When Lindsay dies in a brutal, well-publicized murder, Jenny begins to suspect that the killer is one of her clients, an unlovely mix of lawyers, doctors, financial types, and idle rich.

Are Don and Cissy Chandler, the young owners of a Gilded Age mansion and Lindsay's former employers, behind the young Scot's death? So many questions...

The problem, Jenny soon discovers, is that there are far too many questions, and far too many suspects. Can she and her newest employee, the underemployed philosophy Ph.D. Craig Lambert, find the killer before he strikes again? And will Jenny's and Craig's growing friendship lead to romance ... or to a shallow grave in New Hampshire?
