This open access book introduces learning-based innovation (LBI) in workplaces, covering the roles, processes, projects, and premises that shape it. It compiles and presents the results and conclusions of the EDLI (Employee-Driven Learning and Innovation) research project (2022-2024), funded by the Research Council of Finland. LBI highlights how individual competencies, knowledge, attitudes, and understanding-along with the sharing of these elements-are critical elements of learning processes which serve as fundamental drivers of innovation. This perspective shifts the focus from mere structural or technological innovation to the ways in which learning, collaboration, and knowledge exchange enable sustainable and impactful workplace innovation. A key strength of this book lies in its empirical insights from two distinct work environments, the public sector (policing) and the private sector (technology industry), thereby illustrating that fostering LBI is not sector-specific but rather a crucial element of innovation across diverse work contexts. By integrating theoretical insights with concrete examples, the book makes a scientifically significant contribution to adult workplace learning and innovation studies. It is a useful resource for students and researchers interested interested in the topic, as well as practitioners such as HR personnel, supervisors, and workplace experts.
