Knuckleballs

This book celebrates 162 (plus playoffs) winning efforts of knuckleball pitchers throughout the history of baseball, using a day-by-day approach. Pick any random date during the baseball season, and find out what a knuckleballer did to win a game that day. While the big names in knuckleballing history are heavily covered (Phil Niekro, Joe Niekro, Hoyt Wilhelm, Tim Wakefield, Charlie Hough, Tom Candiotti, and others), non-household names also made it into the book, such as Steve Sparks, Kirt Ojala, Daniel Boone, Larry French, Warren Hacker, Lum Harris, along with many others.

However, it should be noted that this book is not simply about knuckleballs. Included are references to numerous events and stories in the history of baseball (some of which have been forgotten), such as

• a story about how Babe Ruth lost a home run against Eddie Cicotte, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, and the White Sox
• a reference to Ruth's "called shot" in the 1932 World Series
• mention of other Ruth tidbits such as his being caught stealing to end the 1926 World Series and his 1917 combined no-hitter with Ernie Shore

• mention of Virgil "Fire" Trucks, who threw two no-hitters during a 5-19 season

• a story about a Philadelphia A's pitcher who didn't want to play in the big leagues and instead preferred to return to the minors
• reminders of who else who had strong seasons in 1941 other than Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams
