Imperatives and Insulators: Nobel Physics Stories, Book Two, 1910 to 1919 brings to life the nine Nobel Prize-winning discoveries in physics from one of the most turbulent and scientifically revolutionary decades in history, traversed the final years of classical physics and the first, disorienting steps into the quantum world. Between those two poles, it crossed a world war.

Van der Waals corrected the ideal gas law to account for the stubborn reality of molecules. Wien gave warmth a mathematical shape. Dalén made lighthouses work without keepers. Kamerlingh Onnes reached temperatures so low that matter confessed properties it could not reveal at ordinary temperatures. Von Laue turned crystals into windows onto atomic architecture. The Braggs made those windows readable by any laboratory in the world. Barkla showed that every element speaks its own X-ray language, regardless of disguise. Planck introduced the quantum, the irreducible minimum of energy exchange, and changed the grammar of physics permanently. And Stark discovered that spectral lines are not fixed signatures but responsive signals, carrying information about the conditions in which they were produced.

Each of the nine stories in this collection takes one of these Nobel Prizes as its heart. The physics is real. The characters, human and flawed and frequently brilliant, are invented to bring it alive.

A Dutch physicist explains phase transitions to a winemaker whose family is approaching one. A Berlin portrait painter discovers in a radiation laboratory that warmth is a distribution, not a colour. A lighthouse inspector on the Swedish coast finds that automation is a moral choice as well as an engineering one. A cryogenic researcher learns the difference between cold as a refuge and cold as a tool. A laboratory assistant in Munich photographs diffraction patterns through the summer of 1914, saving the plates as the world outside begins to come apart. A father and son argue about measurement and interpretation in a London laboratory, with commission papers in the son's pocket and ten days before he leaves for France. A German spectroscopist working under wartime suspicion in an English port discovers that characteristic X-ray emissions make it impossible to lie about what something is. A patent attorney preparing a courtroom case on quantised energy finds in Planck's constant an unexpected vocabulary for irreducible grief. And in post-war Berlin, Doppler-shifted spectral lines turn out to be the medium for a covert message that only someone trained in the physics can read.

Every discovery is accurate. Every story is new. Together they make the second decade of Nobel physics not a chapter in a textbook but a living world, full of people for whom these ideas arrived not as settled knowledge but as sudden, disorienting, and irreversible light.
