Hydrometallurgy

Hydrometallurgy harnesses the chemistry of aqueous solutions to extract metals from a variety of sources, including ores, mineral concentrates, and even recycled materials or residues left from previous processes. This field is pivotal to the global economy, contributing significantly to the multi-billion dollar minerals processing sector. The array of hydrometallurgical techniques includes several key processes: agglomeration, which prepares ores for further processing; leaching, the extraction of metal from ore by using a chemical solvent; solvent extraction and ion exchange, which separate metals from the leach solution; metal recovery, where the extracted metal is converted into a pure, usable form; and the remediation of tailings and waste, aiming to mitigate the environmental impact of mining activities.
The development and application of these processes are not without challenges. As the industry moves forward, it encounters a range of complex issues that span both chemistry and engineering disciplines. Among these challenges are the declining grades of ore available for mining, which necessitates the processing of larger volumes of material to obtain the same amount of metal.
