In Civil Disobedience, Henry David Thoreau wrote that he required that every writer offer, "a simple and sincere account of his own life, and not merely what he has heard of other men's." However Small and Hidden does just that, initially through essays and first-hand accounts, and then through reality-based short fiction and finally through sheer speculation.
