Originally known as the Deutsche Dogge (German Dog), the breed gained international recognition as the Great Dane due to its grand stature. Despite its name, the Great Dane does not have any direct association with Denmark, and the name is likely a result of a French naturalist's admiration for the breed during the 18th century.
Great Danes made their way to other parts of Europe and the United States, where they gained popularity. In the early 20th century, the breed was recognized by various kennel clubs and became a beloved companion and show dog worldwide.
