People who are awake at that hour, not just awake but unable to shut their heads off - night janitors, teens who can't sleep, nurses on smoke break, grieving spouses sitting in the dark - begin picking up a broadcast that isn't on any licensed frequency, can't be traced to any tower, and can't be heard in daylight. Parents call it a prank. Police deny it. The church tells people not to feed it with attention. But listeners know it's real because some of them don't come back the same afterward.
They call it 103.3 Graveyard Frequency. During the day, 103.3 is nothing special: cheap farm ads and country pop from somewhere else. But at 3:03 a.m., it becomes something else. The signal slides in, clean and impossible, like someone flips on a hidden layer of the world for one hour and anyone tuned in falls through.
The DJ calls himself Merrick. His voice sounds like worn vinyl - warm, low, soft around the edges, like he's talking from another time. He never laughs, but you can hear him smiling. If you keep listening, you can also hear faint whispers behind him, like other people are in the booth with their mouths too close to his neck.
Merrick says he only plays "death songs."
He asks every caller the same question: "What do you want to play on your last night on Earth?"
And people answer. They tell him the truth they won't say in daylight. Fear answers. Loneliness answers. The things people keep swallowed answer.
This is where Isaac Calder comes in.
Isaac isn't a police officer, a priest, or a believer. He's an audio engineer. He believes every signal has a source, every interference has a cause, and every illegal station leaves fingerprints. Bellwether isn't his town. He doesn't care about its rumors.
