Giray Dynasty: Rulers of the Crimean Steppe is an accessible narrative history of the Crimean Khanate, from its emergence out of the Golden Horde in the fifteenth century to its annexation by the Russian Empire in 1783 and the long afterlife of Crimean Tatar memory. The book follows the Giray khans, the Ottoman-Crimean relationship, the steppe frontier, diplomacy with Muscovy and Poland-Lithuania, military culture, economy, religious life, architecture, and daily society.

Written for general readers while grounded in modern scholarship, the book does not romanticize the khanate or reduce it to a single function. It confronts the violence of raiding and the Black Sea captive trade, while also giving serious attention to court culture, Islamic learning, urban life, women's legal and economic roles, and the institutional complexity of a Chinggisid Muslim state.

The closing chapters trace the decline of the khanate, the Russian annexation, the nineteenth-century transformations of Crimea, the Soviet catastrophe of 1944, the Crimean Tatar return movement, and the renewed significance of Crimean Tatar identity in the modern period. Balanced, readable, and carefully structured, this volume offers readers a coherent introduction to a polity that shaped the history of Eastern Europe, the Ottoman world, and the Eurasian steppe.
