There's a difference between knowing about God and actually knowing Him.
Religion can give us structure. It can shape our habits. It can even make us feel safe, for a while. But eventually, when life cracks open or our souls grow tired, we realize something is missing: connection.
I know this deeply because I grew up inside of religion.
As a pastor's daughter raised in a very conservative Christian environment, I learned about God from the beginning. I was surrounded by Scripture, sermons, and standards. I knew what it meant to "look holy", but looking back, I didn't yet understand what it meant to be loved by God in the places I was most afraid to be seen.
Let me be clear: I'm deeply thankful for my parents and the foundation they tried to build. But within the churches and communities I was part of, there was often an unspoken message that holiness meant being perfect. That being a "leader's kid" meant being the best. That you could never afford to mess up.
That pressure, however well-intended, made me perform instead of connect. Hide instead of be honest. I thought if I just tried harder, believed more, obeyed better... maybe then I'd feel close to God.
But I didn't feel close. I felt exhausted. And eventually, I rebelled.
There came a season in my life where I walked away from all of it. Not just church, but the carefully constructed version of myself I had been maintaining for years. I was angry, disillusioned, and tired of pretending. For a while, I didn't want anything to do with God at all.
And yet... God never stopped pursuing me.
His grace didn't wait for me to clean up first. His kindness met me in the rebellion, in the questions, in the doubt, and slowly led me back, not into religion, but into a relationship.
This devotional is part of that healing journey, from performance to presence, from rebellion to restoration, from rule-following to real connection with the heart of God.
And if you've carried the weight of religious expectations...
If you've ever questioned whether God really loves you...
If you've run, or are still running...
This journey is for you.
