Chosen as one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts, he became the second American to travel into space and later commanded Gemini 3, the first U.S. mission to maneuver in orbit. As commander of Apollo 1, Grissom raised concerns about a spacecraft he believed was not yet ready. When a ground test fire claimed his life in 1967, those warnings took on tragic clarity.
