Franckstrasse 31 applies the 'poetics of space' to the apartment building in Graz, Austria, where the author grew up in the years after WW2. We enter from the street and proceed from the stairwell to the attic, flat by flat, room by room, and as we explore the building we encounter its history, the nature of its tenants, the author's widowed mother and her siblings, as well as all the characteristic odours, tensions and humorous incidents that typified existence in the building during those years. The book is at the same time a crystallisation of the town of Graz itself, a portrait of Austria, of a family - and of the author herself as she emerged from childhood into adolescence. Edition Korrespondenzen in Vienna published Franckstrasse 31, her first book in German, in 2021.
