Widow Celena Gray is not concerned about fixing the past. Fighting alcoholism, she tries to live every day with new purpose and help rescue those lost in the Vast Desert. On one of her expeditions, she discovers a college student named Drake. He owes a huge debt, and Celena is determined to assist him to her former hometown of Redwick. There she encounters her ex-boyfriend and begins to feel herself come undone.

As her story unfolds, the narrative explores the lives of people living at an isolated church in The Vast Desert. 

Celena is hardened by time and loneliness consumes her. Just as she reaches her breaking point, returning from Redwick, a storm brings something that changes her life and the lives of everyone around her.
