Forgotten Story "BLESSE HAVEN"

History often begins in unexpected places.

Sometimes it begins with a faded photograph tucked away in an old album. Sometimes it begins with a forgotten newspaper article preserved on brittle paper. And sometimes it begins with a place whose story has nearly been lost to time.

For this book, that place was Blesse Haven.

As I searched for information about Blesse Haven, I discovered that very little had been written about its history. Yet scattered among newspaper articles, photographs, military records, American Legion documents, and local archives was the story of an extraordinary commitment to veterans and to the community they returned home to serve.

That search led to another discovery. To understand Blesse Haven, it was necessary to understand By- ron Pennington Croker American Legion Post No. 184. To understand the Post, it was necessary to understand the life of Second Lieutenant Byron Pennington Croker.

To understand Byron's story, it was necessary to return to the First World War and to the generation of young Americans whose lives were forever changed by that conflict.

As each piece of the story came together, it became clear that this was more than the history of one soldier, one organization, or one building. It was the history of an idea: that those who served their country should never be forgotten.

The pages that follow trace that story through the surviving historical record. Where documentation is incomplete, the book identifies the limits rather than filling the gaps with speculation.

This book is offered with deep respect for every veteran, every family, every volunteer, and every cit- izen who helped build this legacy. May it preserve their work for generations yet to come.
