Forever Human

Elizabeth Perry has long embraced the move towards a hybrid world, integrating the most advanced embedded AI available and accepting Lynx, her AI, as part of her. As an enhanced, hybrid human, she is fully aware of the threats and challenges of ever-expanding AI dependence. Preparing with trepidation, subconsciously, for the inevitable. And then the first crisis strikes.

A series of unmanageable power outages, the shutdown of an entire city, chaos embodied. Beth and Lynx are tasked with resolving the power management issues, but they know from the outset that the solution is not simple. Panic takes over the streets, the populace unable to deal with the sudden removal of all the support they have come to rely on. Beth, her partner Alex, and those working with them, must fight their way through the madness, desperate people who do not realize that they have brought this disaster upon themselves.

Beth and Lynx have a plan: reduce the burden on the city-wide Integrated AI system, MAI, by enabling task prioritization and distributing the demand across nearby servers. Then, ramping up the hybrid capabilities of the citizenry, so their reliance on MAI is reduced. But Project Purity, the anti-hybrid faction, has their own agenda. And Beth, along with her team, are their prime targets, as proponents of a hybrid future. Purity relentlessly pursues them, despite worsening news from across the globe as the power outages spread wider and wider, and the world rushes ever closer to total anarchy.

Beth pursues her mission with dogged determination, laying her own life on the line, along with the lives of her colleagues. Global AI integration may be their only chance. But does that pose an even greater risk? Is the trust she has built with Lynx and MAI enough to see them through to a brighter future?

Forever Human is a story about our world, where it is going today, and where that may lead. We must recognize that the future of humanity is now inevitably linked to the technology we have come to depend on, the ever-growing connection we have with Artificial Intelligence. The human species may look different, as we move forward, and it is critical that we recognize where the current trends lead, so that we can prepare for what is coming. Else we will indeed reach limits that cannot be reset, and human society will be plunged into a new dark age.
