"A heart appears, carved beneath the numbers on the forearm."
So opens Forearm in the Camp: 103 poems by the Albanian poet Adriatik Xhemali (DineL), now in English.
These are poems of captivity: camps and prisons, borders and wars, fear learned so thoroughly that it becomes obedience. In them the sun sits on the desert ground, a cut vein "takes legs, like water that refreshes a field," and a voice pleads, "Give me back my shadow before my end begins." The body keeps the record when everything else is erased. In the closing poems, women in a camp raise their children, color the dirty cement with a pink pencil, and hang curtains at the windows that make them prisoners.
Compressed, unsettling and unwilling to explain itself, this is a book to read slowly, one poem to a page.
For readers of war poetry, prison poetry and poetry of witness, and for anyone who reads poetry in translation from the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
