Captain Alfred Hutton wrote Fixed Bayonets in 1890 for the sword-bayonet of the new Lee-Metford magazine rifle. The Army was leaving the Martini-Henry, and the bayonet that replaced it was a different length and a different balance, so he set the drill out again rather than send soldiers back to his 1882 manual. The book takes the reader through the guards, the thrusts, the parries, and the butt, and the opening section is his own verdict on the official exercises of the day.
The lessons are printed as a fencing room would run them. The master's part and the pupil's answer sit side by side in tables. J. E. Breun drew the plates. The thrust, the prime-thrust, and the throw were printed sideways in 1890; here those three figures stand upright. After the lessons there is a glossary of the English, French, and Italian terms, a list of other books on the bayonet, a short chronology, and an index.
Edited by Andy Taylor. The wording follows the 1890 printing, and Hutton's spelling is left as he set it. The engraved plates and the frontispiece portrait come from that edition.
