Als er einmal über die Uraufführung der Oper eines Kollegen schreiben musste, den er nicht kränken wollte, formulierte er seine Vorbehalte diplomatisch. Er sparte nicht mit Lob, schränkte aber zum Schluss ein: "Es ist fast ein Meisterwerk." §Darauf schrieb ihm der in seiner Eitelkeit verletzte Komponistenkollege: "Ich danke Ihnen für Ihre vortreffliche Rezension. Leider ist darin ein Wort zuviel!" §Die Anekdote als prägnante Wiedergabe einer wahren oder erfundenen Begebenheit erhellt schlaglichtartig den Charakter eines Menschen, eine Situation oder einen Zustand. Es gibt Anekdotenbücher der verschiedensten Art, diesen Sammlungen wird hier jedoch nicht einfach eine weitere hinzugestellt: Vielmehr sollen in diesem Buch über Witz und Pointe hinaus gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge und Hintergründe veranschaulicht werden. Die Wechselwirkung zwischen der Welt der Musik und Musiker und den jeweiligen sozialen Verhältnissen bildet das übergeordnete Thema. Damit erschließt sich lebendiges Anschauungsmaterial für ein Verständnis psychologischer, soziologischer und kulturhistorischer Aspekte des Musiklebens.
