The Peter G. Vos family responded to an advertisement of an Emigration Company, along with other farm families and single persons from various provinces of The Netherlands, a total of about 230 people. Instead of coming to "the Italy of North America," where the weather was claimed to be always mild, they were brought, in December, to a cold, dry, high mountain valley. Due to the inadequate housing and the extreme cold, 11 children died that winter. After a poor harvest, the Voses and the other families, except one, left the valley. The Voses spent two years in Luctor, Kansas, and then settled in the Pella, Iowa, area. This book tells their story from the time of their immigration in 1892 until their deaths.
