In 1988, Tom's grandfather drove his silver XJ6 Jaguar off the Hessle Road flyover at eighty miles an hour withTom in the passenger seat. The old man didn't make it, but six-year-old Tom did, albeit with fifty percent burns across his face, chest and arms. It took him six months to get out of the hospital, and he was no longer a normal boy. At school the kids pointed at his burns and called him Roadmap, Face, Waxman, Model, Pretty Boy and lots more.
Tom teaches law at the Uni now. He gets plastered most days. His pretty, pixie haired half Spanish wife is sleeping with her chiropractor. Tom is overweight. He is ashamed of the way he looks and what he has become. He talks to the ghost of his dead father who lives in the shed even though he knows he's not really there.
He's sharp is Tom. He notices things. He knows that Our Dave's wife across the road is dead, and that the loss is killing the man slowly. He knows there's someone trying to kill Our Dave as well.
What can he do about it?
He can't even look after himself.
Like the ghost of Tom's father says, he's made a cock up of being Tom Williams so far. He's going to be someone else, someone better.
He's going to become Face.
