Ezra Explained

"The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up." (Ezra 1:2-3)

A pagan king's decree opens the book of Ezra, and the community that walks through the door it creates does not simply pick up where it left off. The Temple is gone. The monarchy is gone. What remains has to be built from what survived the exile, one honest step at a time.

Ezra follows a people rebuilding an altar before they have walls to protect it, weeping and rejoicing in the same breath at a modest new Temple foundation, and a scribe named Ezra whose devotion to studying, living, and teaching the Torah becomes the pattern for a community learning to tell the truth about how far it has drifted. His prayer of confession does not end in despair. It ends with the recognition that God had "punished us less than our sins deserved and have given us a remnant like this."

Ezra Explained walks through the book's historical setting in the Persian period, its literary structure across two returns, its key themes, and its most common misreadings -- helping readers understand what this often-overlooked account meant to a community rebuilding from nothing, and what it costs, and what it takes, to build something faithful from what remains.
