She had been standing in the room for seven years. Dell Beaumont had been there for four. Neither of them knew, at first, how long the other had been waiting.

Paris, 1925. Dell Beaumont runs the supper club she built from nothing - forty dollars, a borrowed tuxedo, and a private knowledge she has spent her entire adult life making sure stays private. On the north slope of Montmartre, four nights a week, she holds open a room where the music is good, the food is better, and the company after midnight is composed entirely of people who have grown tired of apologizing for what they are. She has made this life with extraordinary care. She has made sure it requires nothing from anyone.

Then, on a Tuesday at closing time, a woman appears at the corner table.

She is French. Well-dressed. Completely still in the way of someone who has been in the room for some time and has simply decided to be visible. Her English carries the weight of a language acquired rather than inherited. She looks at Dell the way you looked at something you already knew the answer to and were simply verifying.

Her name, Dell will eventually learn, is Isabelle Voclain.

Isabelle died in November 1918.

What unfolds across the Tuesdays that follow is both a ghost story and its opposite - a love story between a woman who built her life over her wanting and a woman who spent hers oriented toward something she could see and Dell could not. As Dell pieces together who Isabelle was - through letters left in the cellar, a neighbor who remembers, a brother who has been carrying a secret for seven years - she begins to understand that the room she has been running, the feeling she claimed as her own, was a gift left deliberately by someone who knew she was coming before she arrived.

The Hour After Last Call is a novel about the architecture of self-protection and the cost of maintaining it. About what it meant to be a Black American woman in 1920s Paris - free in ways that Chicago could not offer, and still carrying the rules Chicago had built inside her. About the specific loneliness of a life assembled with such precision that there is no room left for wanting. And about what happens when wanting refuses, after thirty-two years, to stay filed under pending.

Quiet, atmospheric, and deeply felt, this is a novel for readers who believe that the most precise things are the ones we spend the longest time refusing to say.
