Shunned by Everlight Academy and cast out as a monster, Leon Quinn takes refuge at mysterious Everdark, where his shadowy brand of wizardry is welcome. With the help of an eclectic cadre of new friends, including a werewolf, a giant, and a captivating vampire named Cher, who captures his heart, Leon comes to believe there is something rotten at Everdark. Headmaster Aconite has gone mad, and the powerful wizard aims to capture the ultimate source of magical power known as the Well of Lost Light, which is guarded by a young shaman with a remarkable gift.

On the backs of dragons, Leon and Cher make a dangerous journey to the north and encounter Azaria, the child magician Aconite has sent them to assassinate. Mesmerized and charmed by Azaria, they quickly realize their new mission: to prevent the Well of Lost Light from falling into evil hands.
