Escape to Glory: The Untold Story of America's Slave Marines

This historical fiction follows Joshua Freeman, who escapes slavery in Maryland in 1814 by joining British forces during the War of 1812. After serving with distinction in the Colonial Marines, including battles at Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Joshua and fellow former slaves are resettled in Trinidad in 1815.

The narrative chronicles their transformation from refugees into the "Merikins"-successful farmers and landowners who build six prosperous Company Villages. Despite achieving remarkable economic success and establishing schools, churches, and self-governing communities, they face ongoing challenges including the 1823 revelation that Britain paid $1.2 million in compensation to their former American masters.

The story explores complex themes around freedom, dignity, and systemic oppression. When slavery is abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833, the Merikins become mentors to newly freed people, sharing hard-won knowledge about transitioning from bondage to sustainable independence. However, their success creates tensions with colonial authorities who view their influence as potentially destabilizing to racial hierarchies.

Through Joshua's perspective, the narrative examines how legal freedom differs from meaningful liberation, the importance of land ownership and education, and the ongoing struggle to make emancipation transformative rather than merely administrative. The Merikins represent both the possibilities and limitations of freedom within systems still shaped by racial oppression.
