Entrance English Questions Set by the College Entrance Examination Board

"Entrance English Questions Set by the College Entrance Examination Board 1901-1928" offers a comprehensive overview of the evolving standards for secondary education and university admission in the United States during the early decades of the twentieth century. Compiled by Winifred Quincy Norton and Clark Sutherland Northup, this volume preserves the actual examination questions posed to prospective college students over a twenty-seven-year period.

The collection provides invaluable insight into the literary canon of the era, showcasing the specific works of poetry, prose, and drama that were considered essential for academic proficiency. Beyond literature, the questions reflect the historical emphasis on rhetoric, composition, and critical analysis. For educators, historians, and researchers, this work serves as a primary source for understanding the development of English pedagogy and the foundational years of standardized testing. The structured format allows for a clear comparison of academic expectations across different years, making it an essential reference for those interested in the history of the College Board and the professionalization of English as a disciplined field of study.
