Montgomery Hale is an ensign now. For real, almost.

He's on the primary helm rotation. The captain trusts him. He flew the corridor mission and he didn't get caught. After a year of waiting for someone to figure out his academy record was forged on a rented terminal when he was sixteen, he's finally relaxing into the job.

That's when things get bad.

Every mission he flies well makes his record look more wrong. A commendation puts his file on a desk at fleet personnel. An operations officer with a perfect memory starts noticing. And then the ship gets orders back to the station where Montgomery grew up--to save it from falling into the gas giant below. Just one person recognizing him could send him to a prison colony for 20 years.
