The city was never meant to survive the truth.

After the events of Elsmere The Fires Above, Elsmere is drawn deeper beneath the released sky-city of Aurelith, where the oldest secrets of the empire still live below stone, fire, and memory. There she discovers a hidden undercity of children, forgotten keepers, unfinished witnesses, and ancient chambers built long before the ruling Houses turned power into bloodline law.

But Aurelith is no longer only a city in decline. The Ember Crown has returned from the upper dark to reclaim its lost heir, old source-forces are awakening beneath the foundations, and the split at the center of the city's history is beginning to break open. At the heart of it all lies the First Fire-an ancient power from which the later sovereign flames were carved-and a truth more dangerous than inheritance itself.

As the city fractures above and below, Elsmere and Ashren-the child taken and the child left behind-must confront the buried architecture that shaped both their lives.
