Early Assiniboine Trading Posts of the Souris-Mouth Group

"Early Assiniboine Trading Posts of the Souris-Mouth Group, 1785-1832" is a detailed historical investigation into the formative years of the fur trade in the Canadian West. Centered on the strategic confluence of the Souris and Assiniboine Rivers, David A. Stewart examines the establishment and operations of various trading outposts that served as critical hubs for commerce and colonial expansion. The work highlights the intense rivalry between the North West Company, the Hudson's Bay Company, and independent interests during a period of rapid territorial and economic shifts.

The narrative meticulously reconstructs the history of these sites, providing geographic and archival insights into the logistical realities of the frontier. Beyond simple commerce, the book explores the vital interactions between European traders and the Indigenous populations of the plains, illustrating how these relationships shaped the social and political landscape of the region. This volume remains a significant resource for scholars and readers interested in Canadian history, the economics of the fur trade, and the early exploration of the Prairie provinces. Stewart's research offers a clear window into the foundations of regional development and the complex legacy of the North American interior during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
