This work of fiction is set in the American southwest, in the time period between the end of the industrial era and the dawn of the modern age. The lead character feels caught between two worlds, much as we often do in these rapidly changing times. As you read, consider the similarities between the historical backdrop of this story and our own time. We currently live in fast-changing times and sometimes it feels like we're already living in the future. Keep in mind that in 1892, two major innovations that would usher in the modern age, electricity and the internal combustion engine, were still in their infancy. When things change quickly, it can lead to a desire for a simpler life, creating a longing within us for a quiet place where we can find freedom and peace. The main character in this story has hopes and dreams that were inspired by real life goals and desires. Most notably, the desire to eventually leave the "fast-lane" and "rat-race", and to retire with dignity to a quiet, peaceful place.
