Rose has lived a life of pain and isolation, her only friends a young boy named Shiloh and a dragon named Vincent. The people of her hometown call her Dragon Lady and whisper of her being a witch. Rose has come to terms with her life and convinced herself she doesn't need anything else. But after she and Vincent save the life of a drifter named Samuel, nursing him back to health begins to stir unwelcome feelings within her. When he's well enough to leave she assumes she'll never see him again. The next time he arrives at her door, however, he's carrying his gravely-ill daughter and begging for Rose's help. She answers his plea for help but can't help wondering if she'll be able to say goodbye a second time.
