Die Legende des Dr. Faustus, der einen Pakt mit dem Teufel eingeht, ist ein immer wiederkehrender Mythos in der europäischen Literatur. Den Grundstein legte ein Volksbuch aus dem späten 16. Jahrhundert, das in romanhafter Weise die Lebensgeschichte des Schwarzkünstlers darstellte. Gustav Schwabs Werk ist eine Adaption der ursprünglichen Erzählung. Der Theologe übersetzte die mittelalterliche Schrift in eine zeitgenössische Version für die Leser des 19. Jahrhunderts und trug so zusammen mit Goethe zu der weiteren Verbreitung des Fauststoffes wesentlich bei. Während Goethe aber aus Faust einen aufgeklärten Gelehrten machte, blieb Schwab der negativen Charakterisierung aus dem Originaltext treu. Trotz oder gerade wegen dieses Kontrasts zu Goethes Faust, fasziniert Schwabs Erzählung noch heute.
