Deadly in Bloom

A Bracken Bay Market Mystery, Book Two

Spring has come to Bracken Bay, bringing flowers, tourists, and a murder hidden among the blooms.

Eight months after solving her first case at the Saturday Market, forty-eight-year-old Mara Vale is beginning to understand the rhythms of the town she once planned to leave behind. She still refuses to call Bracken Bay permanent, but the vendors look to her for answers, Detective Lena Ortiz respects her eye for timelines, and woodworker Graham Rook has become a steady presence she can no longer dismiss as simple friendship.

Then the Bracken Bay Spring Blossom Fair opens.

The restored Merriweather Glasshouse is overflowing with tulips, heritage plants, competition arrangements, and ambitious growers hoping to impress celebrated floral designer Celeste Harrow. Brilliant, demanding, and famous for reviews that can destroy careers, Celeste has returned to judge the centerpiece competition. By morning, she is dead on the glasshouse floor beside a shattered terracotta pot.

At first, the scene suggests a tragic fall. Mara knows better than to trust appearances.

Celeste had accumulated enemies as carefully as awards: a flower farmer she belittled, a heritage nursery owner locked in a decades-old feud with her, a niece who spent years in Celeste's shadow, a former lover with professional grievances, a compromised judging chairman, and a conservatory owner whose rare plants are coveted throughout the region.

Then Mara notices a flower that should not exist.

A deep burgundy dahlia called Midnight Ember appears in a competition arrangement weeks before it should naturally bloom. Time-stamped photographs prove the flower was inserted during the same narrow window in which Celeste died. The arrangement seems to point directly toward one suspect, but as Mara reconstructs greenhouse access, staging schedules, photographs, and plant provenance, the evidence begins to look less like a clue and more like a carefully planted accusation.

Someone wanted Celeste silenced. Someone knows how to turn horticultural knowledge into misdirection, and is willing to destroy evidence rather than let Mara discover why Midnight Ember matters.

As Mara follows the trail through flower farms, heated greenhouses, rivalries, and the lucrative world of heritage plants, she must trust what she notices without pretending she can do the police's job. Ortiz handles the evidence and warrants. Mara does what she does best: finds the point where a story stops fitting the physical reality around it.

Meanwhile, Graham continues to surprise her. He does not push, rescue, or assume. When Mara is overwhelmed, he asks whether she wants advice, help, or company, and waits for her answer. Their connection deepens through quiet choices, forcing Mara to consider whether Bracken Bay is becoming more than the place she returned to out of obligation.

And beneath the modern murder, another secret is taking root.

A pressed violet, a missing ledger page, and the notation "13 subscriptions paid" suggest the thirteen founding families contributed to something far more important than vendor stalls, a mystery that may one day determine who truly has a claim to Bracken Bay's waterfront.

Lush with spring atmosphere, fair-play clues, small-town humor, mature slow-burn romance, and the behind-the-scenes world of flower growers and floral design, Deadly in Bloom is the second Bracken Bay Market Mystery, where beauty can be cultivated, reputations manufactured, and the most dangerous lie may be the one everyone wants to believe.

In Bracken Bay, every flower has a season. This one is blooming far too soon.
