DEAD BEFORE CHECK-IN

Marko is not a great assassin. He is competent, careful, and painfully human, which in his line of work counts as a liability. He is exhausted, broke, and clinging to small promises like life preservers. A cheap vacation he will probably cancel. A porcelain bird his grandmother has been hinting at, ridiculous and fragile and impossibly hopeful.

One wire transfer that might finally let him breathe.

The luxury apartment smells of money and silence when he arrives. The kind of silence that belongs to places where consequences rarely visit.

Flora stands barefoot beside the body, glass in hand, as though she has stepped out of a vacation brochure and into the aftermath of a murder without missing a beat. Soft smile. Summer dress. Calm eyes that take Marko in without fear or apology. She looks like the sort of woman people trust instinctively, the sort who could ruin a life without raising her voice.

She explains it easily. Almost casually.

She was on holiday. The intel pinged. The target was close. She decided to handle it before catching her flight. Business, folded neatly into pleasure.

For Flora, killing is not desperation or survival. It is precision. It is control. It is a game played at a level Marko has never been allowed to reach.

The problem is that Marko needed this kill.
