My late father, David Warner, was a member of the Greatest Generation; he served in the Army in Europe in WW II. These personal documents include letters to his twin brother, who was in the Navy in the Pacific; their complaints about 'woman problems' are by turns annoying, touching, and downright hilarious. It also includes letters to Wally, a female pen pal he never met, that report minor episodes of insubordination and the details of everyday life. "East of the Elbe" is an account of an ill-fated souvenir hunting expedition near the end of the war. Other brief essays describe his childhood in a small Pennsylvania town during the Depression and his work as a forester on the Yakima Indian reservation in the State of Washington. He was an engaging storyteller with a good sense of humor and an eye for interesting details.
