Dance on Screen is a comprehensive introduction to the rich diversity of screen dance genres. It provides a contextual overview of dance in the screen media and analyses a selection of case studies from the popular dance imagery of music video and Hollywood, through to experimental art dance. The focus then turns to video dance, dance originally choreographed for the camera, which can be characterized by its cutting edge imagery and innovative filming techniques. It is argued that video dance is a hybrid site in which televisual devices manipulate and distort the dancing body and postmodern stage dance strategies are relocated to the television screen. This fusion or contest between dance and television challenges existing notions of choreography, spectatorship, the dancing body and television as a context for dance. The book examines how video dance intersects promotional imagery and discourses of technology, to produce a 'fluid body' that has the potential to disrupt aesthetic and theoretical boundaries.
