When Tomo hears that a sealed stretch of the River Trent has quietly reopened to the public, he organises a weekend kayaking trip with five close friends.

The stretch, seven miles of water between two weirs, closed for decades by the chemical plant that contaminated it, hasn't been paddled by anyone. Ever.

They launch on a Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon, one of them is dead.

Something lives in the water. Something large, aggressive, and impossibly adapted to the chemical darkness of a river that was never properly cleaned. Something that has been breeding, growing, and starving in a sealed system for twenty years.

Trapped between concrete walls with no phone signal and no way out, the remaining men must survive a night on a tiny island while the water around them moves with a patience and intelligence that shouldn't exist in any river.
