INJURY IS A DISEASE OF TIME.

Energy decides what the body has suffered. Anatomy decides which structures fail first. Time decides whether that failure can still be reversed. CLINICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TRAUMA CARE 2027 is built around that relation, and it follows the injured patient the way the patient actually travels: from the scene, through the trauma bay and the operating room, into intensive care, and on toward recovery.

This is a working reference, not a curriculum. Eighteen chapters hold ninety numbered entries, and every entry opens with an At a Glance fact file that states the definition, the threshold that changes management now, the first actions in order, the evidence that anchors current practice, and the error most likely to harm a patient. A clinician with one minute gets the thresholds. A clinician with an hour gets the reasoning behind them.

WHAT THIS BOOK COVERS

  • The continuum of care: trauma systems and field triage, prehospital hemorrhage control and transfusion, the xABCDE primary survey, in-hospital airway management, and damage control resuscitation including massive transfusion, viscoelastic testing, and aortic occlusion
  • Injury by region: traumatic brain injury, spinal column and cord injury, maxillofacial and ocular and neck trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, pelvic and genitourinary injury, musculoskeletal and extremity trauma, and vascular trauma
  • Burns and environmental injury: burn resuscitation and referral, inhalation injury, electrical and chemical injury, accidental hypothermia, frostbite, and drowning
  • The patients who change the rules: children, pregnancy, older adults, recognition and safe referral of inflicted injury, and tactical and austere care
  • After the operation: trauma critical care, anesthesia and analgesia, wound care, rehabilitation, quality improvement, and end-of-life care

BUILT FOR THE BEDSIDE

  • 108 photographs of trauma bays, equipment, and technique, every one captioned and referenced in the text
  • More than 145 tables: grading scales, decision rules, dosing, thresholds, and management pathways
  • Feature panels on every few pages: Trauma Bay Pearl, Time-Critical Alert, Injury Mechanism and Physiology, Dosing at the Bedside, and Do Not Miss
  • A composite case opens each chapter and is resolved at its end
  • Back matter built for use: a trauma drug and blood product reference, scores and formulas, decision rules and activation criteria, a 130-entry clinical glossary, a 136-entry abbreviations list, references, and an index

CURRENT AND CHECKED

The 2027 edition reflects practice as it now stands: catastrophic hemorrhage ahead of the airway in the primary survey, whole blood and prehospital transfusion, viscoelastic-guided correction of coagulopathy, randomized evidence on aortic occlusion, rib fixation, and the current consensus on determination of death by neurologic criteria. Guidance is drawn from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Western Trauma Association, the Brain Trauma Foundation, and the American Burn Association, with international divergence noted where it matters at the bedside.

WHO IT IS FOR

Emergency physicians, trauma and acute care surgeons, surgical and emergency medicine residents, trauma and emergency nurses, flight and critical care paramedics, advanced practice providers, and anyone who may be the most senior clinician in the room when an injured patient arrives.

This book is an educational reference. It does not replace professional training, clinical judgment, institutional protocols, or the assessment of a patient by a qualified clinician.
